Rowing the Atlantic

Two members of AberdyfiRowing Club have been helped by The Peter Saunders Trust to realise their dream of rowing the Atlantic.

Ian Andrews and Joss Elliott in their boat, Pendovey Swift, were among more than 20 rowing boats from around the world which took part in the 2007 Atlantic Rowing race. The Peter Saunders Trust was pleased to support the team with an award towards the cost of purchasing and building the boat.

The arduous race, which covers 2,500 miles from La Gomera in the Canary Islands to Antigua in the Caribbean, involves danger of capsize, seasickness, sunburn, dehydration - as well as shark attack! Ian and Joss completed the crossing in just over 62 days having alternated two-hours rowing and two hours resting or sleeping to keep the boat moving the whole time.

Alongside the personal challenge of taking part and completing the race, Ian and Joss were raising funds for two cancer charities: Brain Tumour UK and The Prostrate Cancer Charity.
